The Jefferson Parish Department of Environmental Affairs and the
Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana are seeking volunteers for the planting of 3000 plus
cypress trees in the riparian areas of Bayou Segnette. Plantings
will occur on two Saturdays this month.
Volunteers will meet at the Bayou Segnette State
Park boat launch, 7777 Westbank Expressway, in Westwego, Louisiana
on the following Saturday’s at 8:00 a.m. March 13th and 20th.
2010.
They need boats and volunteers for these dates.
They will also have over 100 college students from across
the US plant trees on Friday March 12th. These students are with the
Neomia Foundation. Volunteers with boats are needed on Friday to
help provide transportation for these volunteers as the planting
sites are only accessible by boat.
Trees will be planted at camps along the waterway and
further south in the Jean Lafitte National Park. Camp owners who
want trees for their camp property should contact Jason Smith at
Jefferson Parish Department of Environmental Affairs, 504-736-6440.
Trees are free to camp owners. Camp owners can plant the trees
themselves or volunteers will plant the trees for them.
