Congrats on the cats ! Gotta watch those sting rays ! One stuck me in my forearm trying to get it off of a trot line . I think the can actually aim that barb because he got me good , atleast 4 inches went in my arm . Surprisingly it didn't hurt for about an hour , I was trying to finish up running my lines . After about an hour my whole shoulder started aching really bad and made me nervous so I called my wife and told her what happened and I was coming home .

When I got home my wife had a hot hot bath with ebson salt waiting for me . When I got into the tub and dipped my arm under the water the pain stopped immidiately , it was crazy . My wife had looked it up online before I made it home and the hot water kills all the sting rays poison .

I never went to the dr but have a nice lil round reminder (scar) that the sting ray left on me , about a 1 inch round one ! Lol I have a new found respect for them now and I'm a lot more careful hand eking them when I do come into contact with them .

All I can say is OUCH! Most of the time, I cut the line. Accidents happen real fast.

I caught one once and the guy I had with me freaked out. I took the boat paddle and held that sucker down on the side of the boat and unhooked it. Never let it in the boat. Then he give me a good lecture about how dangerous they are. Guess I was lucky.

I have in the past unhooked them. I just don't really care to do it. The paddle is a good idea. As long as that barb under the tail doesn't get you, you are good to go.

But.... and a big but... If that sucka gets ya... I hear a prick from a catfish has nothing on the pain these things can bring upon you. I hope I never find out from experience.

Actually I was finned by a pound and a half catfish about a month later . The 2 inch barb buried all the way to the hub in my calf ! I came real close to passing out right there in the boat . It was crazy because it hurt way worse than the stingray . Lol

But a stingray IMO can actually strike at you with it's tail like a snake . Atleast that's what that one did me . The barb went through a sweatshirt I had on . Now I'll cut my line or leave it on a trot line till it dies .

I'm always careful .usually hold them down with something if I can see the hook.if not cut the line.a guy from Lafitte showed me how to hold them by their eyes did it once or twice.don't really like doing that.

Kind of makes me want to have a whole new respect for them now.
